Christian NBA Player Jeremy Lin shares how God directs his path

You've probably heard about NBA player Jeremy Lin's AMAZING 3 pointer Tie-Breaking Shot at the Toronto Raptors Game VS The New York Knicks on Valentines Day (Feb 14 2012) at the Air Canada Center downtown Toronto, with less than 1 SECOND to go!!!

Just who is Jeremy Lin? He's 23 years old, a Harvard Grad, and the first NBA player of Taiwanese decent. He plays for the New York Knicks, and he's a Christian.

Last Year, Jeremy spoke at a Christian church, sharing about how God directed his career path to the NBA, in circumstances beyond his control. He also talks about "God's fingerprints" on his life.

Pretty neat to hear of more and more athletes showcasing near-to-impossible goals... and then, when people get curious about them, they eventually find out where their heart lies and beliefs, and hear about how God is working in their lives.

How to Make Bacon Roses for Your Valentine

1. Buy plastic Rose stems from the dollar store (if they come with a rose already you can just remove the rose)

2. Roll Up Bacon the Shape of a Rose BEFORE cooking... you wont cook this on a stove top but rather bake them in the oven in Cupcake Pans so they retain their shape. Bake at 375 degrees F.

3. Pick the best bacon-roses once they are cooked,

dont forget to take a paper towel to wipe off all the grease, and place them on the stems!

This week on The Breakfast Club, we heard about mice, raccoons, squirrils, and even porcupines getting into people's vehicles/engines to chew on cables or to make nests!

Here's probably what your vehicle would look like if A BEAR got into it.... (courtesy of a man in Alberta who left his doors unlocked at a National Park and a bear managed to get in... yipes!!!!)

Some Tips experts recommend to deter critters from making "a new home" in your vehicle include using moth balls, and to even consider placing mice traps by your car with some yummy bait like fruits or nuts. (Just make sure you dont step on one yourself!)

Yes, my son BJ and I were singing this song at the start of every period yesterday at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound!

So how does the play-by-play voice for the Barrie Colts end up cheering for a team that has won nearly every "Battle of Highway 26" between these teams over the last two years?

It's amazing what a dad will do for his kid.

Somehow, my boy has taken a liking to the Owen Sound Attack. Which isn't a bad thing - they are, after all, the defending OHL Champions. And they have a ton of exciting young players, like Cameron Brace and Gemel Smith (pictured above). Fine young men, as are all of the players we met yesterday. 90.1 listeners - you have a team you can be very proud of!

Yesterday's game included a free skate with the team and opportunities for pictures and autographs with the players. BJ had a huge smile on his face the entire afternoon - and most of the ride home. And if you're a parent - nothing could be more gratifying.

Ok - we've seen so many of these on the internet now, they're starting to get old...but this is one of the best ones I've come across yet. Be sure to watch the entire video, because they do several songs, and there are a couple of surprises in each one!

I still have never seen a flash mob in-person, but it would be awesome to see one happen live. Or better yet - be IN one! It would be easy enough for any church choir to pull off with a couple of rehearsals. The tricky part is - you only get one chance to pull it off inside the mall (or you blow your cover!)

Note the security guard who walks by about two-thirds of the way through...I wonder what he's thinking? Probably struggling to figure out a way to shut it down since it was likely unauthorized. Good luck with that!

AMAZING SOCCER GOAL!

I'm not much of a soccer fan - but my jaw absolutely dropped when I saw this clip of one of the most remarkable soccer goals you'll ever see.

To the untrained eye (like mine), the kick itself might be a little hard to pick up. Watch the replays, and to fully appreciate, you may want to pause the action a couple of times and look at it frame-by-frame.

You're looking for one of the blue-striped players - watch him set himself up by bouncing the ball off his own head, and then - facing the wrong way - he fires a beautiful bicycle-kick with his left foot, driving the ball into the back of the net. (Other than playing foosball, I can't say I've ever scored a goal like that before).

David Nelson of the Buffalo Bills scored a touchdown in yesterday's game in Dallas against the Cowboys. So how did he celebrate? By jogging over and handing the ball to his sweetheart, of course - cheerleader Kelsi Reisch.

There was only one unusal thing about this. Kelsi is a cheerleader for the Dallas Cowboys...the team he had just scored against!

What an unusual situation to be in! As a Cowboy cheerleader, she couldn't appear too excited about the Bills scoring against her team in front of the Cowboy fans. All things considered, she handled it well.

I wonder what happens if things work out and they get married? Something tells me one of them will have to be traded.

THE NEW COKE CAN

You've heard the saying, "Never mess with a good thing."

Why is it then that the braintrust at Coca-Cola - the most successful (and best tasting) soft-drink on earth - are continually trying to re-invent themselves?

Coke Zero. Diet Coke. Vanila Coke. Caffeine-Free Coke. Coke With Lime. And worst of all, the infamous blunder that was called "New Coke" (which temporarily replaced the original flavour for three months in 1985 - and failed miserably).

People like a good thing. I know I do. My grandfather has a bowl of Raisin Bran every morning, and a PB&J sandwich for lunch. EVERY DAY. Why? It works for him. He knows what he's getting, and he knows what he likes - so why not stick with something you like every time?

I am cut from the same cloth. And when it comes to soft drinks, you will never open my fridge door and not find red Coke cans stashed inside. I guess they will be white cans now. Something about a campaign to save polar bears (which I'm all for). But I am NOT in favour of the new white can.

At least the Coke inside the can will still be the same classic, great-tasting Coca-Cola. Visually though - the experience will be different. White cans seem a little too soft to me. As if it's a milder version of Coke - like vanilla or something. I don't understand the logic.

I guess some people like change-for-the-sake-of-change. Me? I like to stick with a good thing.

October 21st was SU Sportz "Real Deal Family Night" with the Toronto Argos! LIFE 100.3 listeners were on hand, along with tons of church groups and Christian schools from all across Ontario. I was blessed to be able to take my own family: here I am with my kids BJ (6) and Esther (3), and Jason the Argonaut. I'm not sure how old he is, but the Argonauts franchise has been around for 138 years...so he may be older than the three of us combined!

Despite a near-epic 4th quarter comeback attempt, the Argos came up short in the end, losing 31-24 to the Eskimoes. But the best part of the night was the post-game event, where we heard testimonies from several Toronto Argonaut players and had the opportunity to meet them for pictures and autographs. Not only that, but I was able to say hello to my favourite CFL player of all time - Argo legend Michael "Pinball" Clemons!

It was a memorable event - thanks to all LIFE listeners who came out to cheer on the Argos and enjoy a great night!

Occupy Toronto/Baystreet 2011 Pictures

In downtown Toronto over the weekend, a view of the "Occupy Toronto / Baystreet" protesters on Bay street (taken from a balcony). Im sure you can see them lining the street above. They eventually set up tents at St.James Park.

While walking downtown in the Financial District, these friendly protesters posed for a picture.

The protests here have been fairly peaceful so far, lets hope and pray they stay that way. These "Occupy" protests are a grassroots movement ongoing in 80 countries around the world (including cities in Canada like Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto) that feature demonstrations against corporate greed and global financial inequality.

SAUSAGE RACE!

One of the highlites of my summer was a 2011 ballpark road trip we took which included a stop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Brewers pulled off a thrilling win over Cincinnati, and we had a terrific time at the game!

So here we are in October, and surprise surprise....the Milwaukee Brewers are in the playoffs! Right now they are playing in their first National League Championship Series since 1982...and even though they have never been one of our favourite teams in the past, they've kind of become our adopted team this year. My family sort of feels like we are a small part of their success this year, having seen them play at their home park a few months ago.

One tradition at every Brewers home game is the between-inning sausage races on the field. You should have heard my kids scream with excitement! They may not remember much of the ballgame itself years from now, but they will never forget the sausage race. Enjoy!

AMAZING Toby Mac & Jamie Grace Concert Oct 7-8 2011

Toby Mac is such a genuine, youthful, energetic Christ-passionate stage performer and talented musician. It was an AMAZING concert at the Church on the Queensway Friday Oct 7 2011!

There's another show tomorrow Oct 8 you dont wana miss! (If you went on Friday, you can bring your stub in-- and take a friend for 10 bux for tomorrow/Saturday's show)

The line-ups at Church on the Queensway went all around the building for this 3000+ sold-out gig.

I met a few Christian music listeners who lined up to meet Toby Mac before the concert. One couple even phoned their brother, who was a muscian, and asked Toby Mac to encourage him on the phone, during their visit. He did so, with a friendly tone.

Toby was even able to do a radio cut-in with myself, Maria, and Evan Duran of "The Slam" on Life 100.3 where when Evan said on the phone to me: "Give Toby a Hi-5 for me" at that EXACT moment, Toby Mac gave a high-five, without having even heard Evan's voice on the other side of the phone asking me to do so... pretty awesome moment!

Oh, and I also met for the first time the Life Breakfast Club's past famous Co-Host Woody! I've heard so many great things about him.

As the concert started, Jamie Grace did a lively performance which included asking people to dance-- saying it was ok if you're parents embarrassed you or vice versa!

One thing I loved about Jamie Grace's performance was when she shared about the time she cancelled her Blackberry internet data package at 19 years old as a student... and decided to use that money to sponsor a child in an under-developed country with the Compassion organization instead. Wow, what an example to all of us!

Toby Mac then took the stage as energetic as ever! From Stop-and-Go motion dancing to crowd surfing, he definitely presented a youthful spirit, and even promised the people of Toronto a GREAT show!

But he also said that going to the concert, was not about "seeing a Toby Mac/Jamie Grace gig", it was about worshipping God!

He sang a version of Bluetree's "God of this City" and talked about how with 3 of his early songs in the group DC Talk, he found inspiration for them, while walking the streets of Toronto (and wrote them here too!)

He also mentioned, that no matter how far you feel from God, all you need to do is just simply turn around, and He is Right There.

All in all, a very meaningful yet entertaining performance, that was very much full of God's love, energy, and inspiration! :)

Cute video, AMAZING message! I don't know if I can call this Steven Curtis Chapman's best song ever, but I certainly think it's his most relatable.

I can't even begin to tell you how many times this song has turned my day around (and that's the criteria for a great song, isn't it?) Everything matters to God. And whenever you feel like..."What's the point?" or, "Why bother?" or, "Why am I stuck doing this when I wish I could be doing something more important?" - just remember...it all matters!

What I loved most about Maplenoise 2011 Toronto (at Catch the Fire on Sept 16), was not only that the musical performances were outstanding and FUN-- but knowing full well that each and every artist on stage “do what they do” not only because they love it, but as an act of worship to God. I think knowing that, is pretty cool. I feel blessed our radio station, Life 100.3 could be a part of it.

Ten Amazing Christian Bands, one night of great music and worship. The highlight of the night (Newsboys) not only had entertaining stage effects between the rising platforms and the carnival-ride-like spinning of their drum set, but their lead singer Michael Tait (see pic above) also talked about growing up on welfare in the inner city, in a family of 9 where he was the youngest-- yet look where God has brought him today! Michael also talked about how his father passed away from cancer, and how he admired his dad, because it was his father who had taught him about Christ. Also, he says his dad was married to his mother for 42 years and came home every night- a good role model for any family man. He had also mentioned how their band the Newsboys would be “losers” - if it weren't for the grace of Christ in their lives, because it was only through a personal relationship with Jesus that could take away any heavy baggage from the past, and make them clean, new, and born again.

Maplenoise 2011 was a great showcase of today's Christian contemporary music variety (especially with the many Canadian acts). From worship artists who played acoustically, to others who rocked the stage with smoke machines! I really appreciated the night-- besides feeling spiritually uplifted by being able to sing along to songs in praise of our wonderful God- I also genuinely enjoyed the acts. Talking to the artists and hardworking staff who made this event possible, was a blessing too. (And as a side note, to the “anonymous person” who came up to me in between emceeing the show and handed me a Twix chocloate bar-- hey, sweet thanks- God bless you! That was so nice!). It was also great that the concert showcased the works of World Vision as well, an amazing international charity that helps children have a brighter future in underdeveloped countries. I look forward to many more Maplenoise events in upcoming years, and pray God is able to bless this tour with much success across Canada so that they can continue to be that place where people can bring their friends to not only hear/enjoy great music... but also hear about Christ, and be a place where people can feel his love... through the music, the artists, and the message.

AMAZING TURTLE RESCUE!

Saw this amazing video of Sara the 115 pound loggerhead turtle. Her life was saved after she was discovered with a four-foot spear sticking out of her head.

Awesome to see her swimming back into the water after her recovery. If she could talk, I bet she'd be saying "Get me out of here!"

Hey, it's Maria!!! Ok, I will admit Im not the most tech savvy person.... so.... I thought I would write my first blog ever with a "Helllllo Everybody!!! I hope this works!" Hehe. Also.... I went to Wasaga Beach for the first time in my life yesterday... it's the week of September 12th and it still feels like summer, what a blessing to live around Barrie where the beaches are gorgeous and the seagulls are a plenty! And the humidity some days makes you feel like you live in Hawaii. (For the record, at Wasaga Beach over the weekend I saw dozens of seagulls rip open a bag of potatoe chips and consume the ENTIRE bag...... I would have taken a picture but I didnt wana get too close to the action, lol!) Anyways... here is a picture we can all share of Wasaga Beach, use as your laptop wallpaper, etc. We live in a beautiful area, Thank God for the little blessings in your life. Talk to you later!!! REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11th

I'm sure you will be taking a few moments over the weekend to pause and reflect on the world-changing day we all experienced ten years ago. The video above offers a touching reflection on how and why this day is so important all of us.

For me personally? It was a reminder to treasure each and every day with loved ones. To be thankful for those who risk their lives so that I can live in safety and freedom. And to pray that God would protect us from those who wish us harm - and ultimately, soften their hearts and reveal Himself to them.

SUMMER ROAD TRIPS!

So you're on a summer road trip - on your way up north to go camping, south to do some cross-border shopping, or just a short drive to the nearest beach. What five CD's are considered "essential" before you pull out of the driveway? Here's my list!

1. "Tonight," TobyMac. I'm having a hard time thinking of a Christian artist who has demonstrated more creativity in his music than this guy. Great songs, always a solid message, and tunes you can tap your steering wheel to!

2. "Born Again," Newsboys. Their first release under the Michael Tait era. Amazing how this band has had to re-invent themselves so drastically, and yet for the most part they've maintained their appeal to their entire fan base - old and new.

3. "Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs," Donnie McClurkin. I know, I know...not exactly LIFE 100.3 music. But hey - it's MY list! This double-disc set is one of the best collections of worship songs and hymns I've ever come across. Lots of newer songs, and hymns sung with passion in a catchy black-gospel groove. Songs that preach! (as they say in the south)

4. "Outta Space Love," Group 1 Crew. I'm having a hard time not liking these guys. Meeting them at WonderJam sealed the deal for me. They love Jesus, and they love to sing about their faith to anyone who will listen. Very much in the same vein as TobyMac. Music for the streets!

5. "Love and the Lack Thereof," Greg Sczebel. Every song this guy puts out proves himself more and more as an artist unlike any we've seen on this side of the border. Creative genius? That may not be an overstatement. One of the most genuinely nice people I've ever met in Christian music, too.

BEST CHRISTIAN ROCK SHOW EVER!

Yeah, I said it. THE BEST Christian rock show EVER!

I wouldn't even really consider myself a Skillet fan. But after seeing them at WonderJam, and this week at Kingdom Bound - THIS SHOW (in my opinion) is the best Christian rock show I have ever seen! Since the concert, I've watched this video about 7 or 8 times. It's crazy!!!

I could not find any (decent) video from the two concerts they did up here - but this clip from a gig they did in Arkansas shows you their show intro and opening song. Torches of fire that shoot 20 feet off the stage (at least!) Lights and fog like you've never seen. The drum platform spins around in circles. John Cooper had a shower of sparks firing out of his guitar! (or did he? Pretty neat trick). At one point Korey (John's wife - the keyboardist) was playing with her back turned to the piano.

Oh - and by the way? John and Korey are 36 and 39, respectively. They have two kids - 9 and 6.

Pretty cool parents, if ya ask me!

Well - I'd be lying if I didn't admit that there's not really a whole lot more I'm thinking about this week than how much I've enjoyed working with my (now) former co-host (yeah - that sounds weird), Woody Woodland.

"The show must continue..." "That chapter has ended..." "It's time to move on..." - yes, I know all of this. We honoured Woody on Wednesday, and said everything we needed to say then. The Breakfast Club has continued through four co-hosts in twelve years...and it WILL continue. That said - working with someone as terrific as Woody Woodland, for 3 1/2 hours every day, for seven years - well, no one has been more blessed by his contribution to The Breakfast Club than I.

Best wishes, Woody. We pray God's best for you and your family. You will always be a friend of The Breakfast Club!

A SNAPSHOT IN TIME

(as heard on the show last week) Here are those pictures of the father and son we were talking about. Chris Bray (no relation to the worship artist) and his dad were on hand at Kennedy Space Centre to watch the first shuttle lift-off. 30 years later, they returned to the same place to watch the last one - and they re-created the photo while they were there.

I love the idea of this, and would like to try doing a few "time capsule shots" with my kids in various places and situations as they get older.

Have you done any really cool time-capsule snapshots? What sorts of places do you think a before-and-after shot spanning many years would be really special? Let's bounce around some interesting ideas here!

A BOLD PRAYER!

As heard on this morning's show (for those who asked for a transcript)

Thanks to my friend Jamie Wilson for sending us a great email. In 1996, the Kansas state legislature invited a pastor named Joe Wright to say a prayer prior to the opening session. Imagine their surprise when he stood up and prayed this prayer:

"Heavenly Father,
We come before you today to ask your forgiveness
and to seek your direction and guidance.
We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good'
But that is exactly what we have done.
We have lost our spiritual equilibrium
and reversed our values.
We have exploited the poor
and called it the lottery.
We have rewarded laziness
and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn
and called it choice.
We have shot abortionists
and called it justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our children
and called it building self esteem.
We have abused power
and called it politics.
We have coveted our neighbour's possessions
and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography
and called it freedom of speech and expression.
We have ridiculed the time-honoured values of our forefathers
and called it enlightenment.
Search us, Oh, God, And know our hearts today;
Cleanse us from every sin

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest.

In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa
and Korea.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

Yes, it happens to be one of my favourite days of the year...not just because - as a dad - the day revolves around you, but because you get the chance to treasure being with the people who mean the most to you.

Yesterday I picked my five-year old son BJ up from school, and on the walk home, he reached for my hand. Generally, I only hold his hand in a parking lot or somewhere with a lot of people. But he just wanted to hold my hand as we walked through the back schoolyard towards our house. It was a special moment - and as he gets older (and "cooler"), I am sure those days won't be around much longer.

So - What makes a great Father's Day? Here's my list - maybe one of these things will trigger an idea for the dad in your family.

1. A nice Sunday morning breakfast - eggs, hashbrowns, dark-roast coffee - go all out!
2. A home-made card from the kids
3. Pick up a morning newspaper and put on "Meet the Press."
4. Go to early Sunday morning service so there's lots of the day leftover.
5. Lunch at Swiss Chalet!
6. An afternoon of baseball - tickets to a Baycats or Blue Jays game, or the Leafs down at Christie Pits.
7. A nice lawn chair in a sunny place somewhere
8. A basket of chicken wings for dinner, and a large Coke with tons of ice in it
9. Pop in one of my favourite DVDs or TV shows.
10. A quiet, stress-free Sunday night - kids go to bed as early as possible!

Hey...if I get ONE of the ten things listed above, I will consider myself very BLESSED by the end of the day! Happy Father's Day to all.

PINBALL SKATEPARK!

It’s simple for seasoned skaters. Pretend they are the ball and try to rank up as many points as possible. The skatepark looks like a pinball machine with authentic lights and sounds. It was built in 17 days, cost half a million dollars, and opened for a competition but will remain open to the public.

Even though I don't skateboard, this is something I would love to try! What would be two activities that you'd like to see somebody morph together in some sort of odd way?

Brian Doerkson coming to Barrie!

So, Ok, I'll get this out of the way - yes, Brian Doerkson and I dress a little alike - but I can categorically guarantee it wasn't by design!

Brian took the time recently to fly all the way to Barrie to get a few of us pumped about his upcoming "Level Ground Experience" coming to Emmanuel Baptist in Barrie next Thursday, June 16th. I can tell you after sitting across the table from this man of God for over an hour, hearing his heart for the church and how he wants his music to connect people with God and not just be another 'Star on the Stage', this event will not be just another concert, but it could be a faith-affirming, life-changing event for you to show up to!

The "Level Ground Experience" includes the band off the stage, on the floor with the crowd, and local people sharing their "Grace Stories" of how God has impacted and changed their lives. Brian says the whole "Level Ground" idea - that we are really all on the same plane, we're really all the same; people who have sinned and require Jesus our Saviour to inject His forgiveness in our lives - was inspired for Brian in two ways: Isaiah 40 talks about, "the rough ground shall become level, and the rugged places a plain" because of God's impact on our lives, and secondly, the influence of Prison Ministry which Brian humbly admits that he was reluctant to get involved with at first, but has time after time blessed him more than his efforts to try to be a blessing to the inmates. TOMORROW'S THE DAY!

So we are now officially less than 24 hours away from Air Raid XIX! Hawk Nelson (left) will be rocking out as our headline act, after openers B. Reith, Manafest, and To Tell. All four artists are sure to bring memorable performances!

Can you believe we have had 18 Air Raid concerts in the history of LIFE? As we approach this one, I've been thinking about how the years (and concerts) have flown by. It doesn't seem that long ago that we were organizing our first one - it was more of a fundraising concert (although we didn't make much money, even though it was well attended), and the name "Air Raid" never really caught on until days before the show. We needed a catchy name, and I suggested "Air Raid." We were still nearly a year from our on-air launch, and I proposed the name to reflect our goal of "raiding the airwaves" with the message of Jesus. And I liked the military theme, as we knew there would be spiritual attacks we would need to stand against along the way. So the name "Air Raid" was adopted, even though all of the posters and flyers had already been printed. Little did I know another concert would be lined up later that fall, and it was immediately called "Air Raid II." The name has stuck to this day.

That first Air Raid was certainly memorable, and Air Raid XIX will have a neat connection with it as Hawk Nelson bassist Dan Biro was also lead vocalist for "The Cheese Monkeys From Planet Nine," one of the opening bands on that historic night in 1998.

Among my other favourite Air Raids would be Air Raid III, when we saw a band called Steadfast play at their home digs (Innisfil Community Church), and a band called Shovelling Taxi introduced us to a drummer named Prim Dogg (who would eventually become a LIFE DJ). I also remember Air Raid VIII - the first time we took Air Raid to Lindsay, and of course Air Raid XIII will be remembered as one of the best Air Raid's ever, as we saw Hawk Nelson and Thousand Foot Krutch perform on the same stage at Timothy Christian School.

A Tribute to Our Fallen that should not be Missed!

WE'VE WAITED ALL YEAR FOR IT!

This week, my son and I finally got to do something we've waited all year for - take in a baseball game!

I am among those who look forward to spring with much anticipation, and one of the great joys of the season is that first trip to the ballpark. The smell of hot dogs and fresh cut grass, the sound of a ball being thrown around, and most of all - the chance to be with my son (BJ - pictured above) and take in something we both enjoy. He picked out the White Sox jersey when we were in Chicago a couple of years ago, and you can see by his button that he is a proud member of the Jr. Baycats Club!

In recent years I've actually enjoyed watching our local team - the Barrie Baycats - more than even Major League games. A ticket is $7.50, kids are free, and you don't need to squint to see the action. And the players are out mingling with the fans before and after each game. You can walk right up to them and get a picture, autograph, or talk to them about the game. It's is truly one of the most enjoyable ways to spend an afternoon or evening.

The home opener this season was cancelled once, and a rain delay pushed Monday's game back by an hour. But we sat there under our umbrella - munching on peanuts and waiting for for it to dry up. And sure enough, the rain stopped and they got the game in - a 13-1 Baycats win!

For the last six seasons I've done play-by-play for the Barrie Baycats on Rogers TV. This year however, I decided to take the summer off. As much as I love announcing and analyzing games from the broadcast booth, I realized I was missing the beauty of just "absorbing" the game and drinking it in. And the beauty of being able to bring my son to the games and watch them with him.

Here's to summer! And here's to many more enjoyable days at the ballpark.

That's right - Baerke Van der Meij is just one year old, yet apparently, he is quite a soccer player! Check out this amazing video:

VVV Venlo, a soccer team in The Netherlands, was so impressed they invited young Baerke to a team practice...and after, the toddler was signed to a ten-year contract! He may be too young to join the team now, but down the road, who knows...!

Kidding aside, the contract was more of a gesture to the boy's grandfather, who apparently was a star player for the soccer team many years ago. Great story!

IN MEMORY OF DAVID WILKERSON

It is with deep sadness this week that we reflect on the life on the late Rev. David Wilkerson, founder of Teen Challenge, who was killed tragically in a collision on Wednesday in Texas.

I thought it would be appropriate to post something I read on this morning's show - this was the final devotional that Mr. Wilkerson posted on his blog the morning of the day he went to be with the Lord. It certainly provides a glimpse into some of the matters he was reflecting on and thinking about on his final day with us here on earth. Perhaps his message is something that will encourage you today.

WHEN ALL MEANS FAIL

To believe when all means fail is exceedingly pleasing to God and is most acceptable. Jesus said to Thomas, “You have believed because you have seen, but blessed are those that do believe and have not seen” (John 20:29).

Blessed are those who believe when there is no evidence of an answer to prayer—who trust beyond hope when all means have failed.

Someone has come to the place of hopelessness—the end of hope—the end of all means. A loved one is facing death and doctors give no hope. Death seems inevitable. Hope is gone. The miracle prayed for is not happening.

That is when Satan’s hordes come to attack your mind with fear, anger, overwhelming questions: “Where is your God now? You prayed until you had no tears left. You fasted. You stood on promises. You trusted.”

Blasphemous thoughts will be injected into your mind: “Prayer failed. Faith failed. Don’t quit on God—just do not trust him anymore. It doesn’t pay!”

Even questioning God’s existence will be injected into your mind. These have been the devices of Satan for centuries. Some of the godliest men and women who ever lived were under such demonic attacks.

To those going through the valley and shadow of death, hear this word: Weeping will last through some dark, awful nights—and in that darkness you will soon hear the Father whisper, “I am with you. I cannot tell you why right now, but one day it will all make sense. You will see it was all part of my plan. It was no accident. It was no failure on your part. Hold fast. Let me embrace you in your hour of pain.”

Beloved, God has never failed to act but in goodness and love. When all means fail—his love prevails. Hold fast to your faith. Stand fast in his Word. There is no other hope in this world.

Well...since we began this blog in October, I think I've done ONE sports-related blog entry. So forgive me for taking such liberty here - but I have to pay credit to the amazing season we are seeing from the Owen Sound Attack this year!

When us OHL-watchers made our pre-season predictions in September (and I read most of them), NOBODY had this team pegged for first-place in the Western Conference. Most of us had them fighting for a bottom-half playoff position - present company included - and I myself said on several occasions that a last-place finish from the Attack wouldn't surprise me.

Then came the trade with Niagara. Then the emergence of a goalie named Scott Stajcer (whom we may see in a New York Rangers jersey very soon). Then a young phenom named Roman Berdnikov decided to come back from Russia. And suddenly, we realized that there was more to this team than we saw at first blush.

At the moment, the Owen Sound Attack are two wins away from their first trip to the OHL Finals in franchise history! And if Mississauga wins the Eastern Conference final over Niagara, the Attack will automatically advance to the Memorial Cup (by virtue of Mississauga being the host city). Who woulda thunk it?!

Tons of credit HAS TO go to Head Coach Mark Reeds (pictured above), who last week took home well-deserved Coach of the Year honours. It's been a bumpy road for the coach. In his three years behind the bench, they had missed the playoffs twice and were knocked out of round one once. Many were shocked he was invited back for a fourth year. On our Rogers TV broadcasts, I was among those who predicted he wouldn't be around much longer if they didn't get off to a good start. Seven months later, I think we can say he's more than earned his job security for the forseeable future!

Game 4 is tonight in Windsor, and we will certainly be glued to the tube. GO ATTACK GO!

A MUST-SEE MOVIE

Let me throw in my nod-of-approval for a movie you've been hearing us talk-up quite a bit here on LIFE - "Soul Surfer." I'll go a step further even and call it a must-see movie!

It was so encouraging to walk into the Galaxy cinema in Barrie 15 minutes before showtime, and find the theatre almost completely packed! And this was four days after it's release. There was a definite buzz before the movie began - lots of people crossing the aisles and visiting people from different churches...certainly not the usual atmosphere before a typical movie, where everyone sits silently, munching popcorn and watching previews.

As for the movie itself, I can't say enough for the quality of the acting, and the movie plot itself (which is based on a true story). Bethany Hamilton loses her arm while surfing after a shark attack, and uses her experience to change the lives of others. To me, the best line of the movie comes at the end, where she is asked by a reporter if she would change her past if it meant not losing her arm. Her answer was no, because she discovered "she could embrace far more people with one arm than she could with two."

The entire theatre burst into a prolonged, lengthy applause as the lights came up and the closing credits rolled...almost as if to make a statement of support for this film to any theatre staff who may have noticed.

Like myself, you have probably paid $12.50 for a movie you walked out of the theatre regretting (or maybe ten minutes into the movie!) How refreshing to find a film with a solid message from start to finish, that leaves you feeling encouraged and inspired in your faith.

Be sure to see "Soul Surfer" in theatres while you can!

The past couple times at the gym, I've been on the eliptical machine just rockin' away to my "Woody's Workout" mix on my ipod, and it's all I can do from bursting out into song! ( not that it would sound very good - I'm pretty out of breath!)

But the tunes are jumping and even more importantly - with my headphones in and some focussed attention, the words of some of these songs... some I've known for decades... are speaking God's goodness to me all over again, right there in the gym... It's like a moment of praise! I feel like I'm going to burst right out of my skin!

A Call to Action for Japan!

Hey Bloggers, Here's the video I mentioned earlier this week on the show that was shown at my church last Sunday. The striking part that impacted me the most is around the 3:45 mark when the local man describes his thoughts on the Tsunami in terms of God's love for him and all of us! His perspective in such circumstances still amazes me! I trust after you watch a video like this - that it won't just be another CNN reel to you or to me, but that it moves us to action in Jesus name for the people and the Church in Japan.

Josh Wilson's lyrics to "I Refuse" keep ringing in my head these days:

SHARATHON IS COMING!

Really - What else is there to talk about this week? SHARATHON!

Every year, I'm continually amazed at the enthusiastic response from our listeners, who step up and support this important ministry financially. I am now one of the few I guess who was here for the first-ever Sharathon LIFE did - and that year, we really had no idea if anyone would call in. There was plenty of excitement amongst us as LIFE staff, but how would the response be from our listeners? I remember how badly I personally wanted to be the first to make a pledge on the first morning, and I had begun filling out a pledge card before we signed on. My intention was to hand it in as soon as we turned on the mics, but I got distracted by something for a few seconds and my (then) co-host Susan Roffel beat me to it! Somewhere, there is a pledge card with my name and the number "002" on it.

Susan would remind me often that she - not I - was the first Sharathon donor to this ministry! But I've long gotten over that disappointment, and my pledge has continued every year to this day.

I pray that we would not lose the excitement of giving that so many of us felt that first Sharathon. To all of you who have supported LIFE with Sharathon donations for many, many years...thank you! Even though I work here, I never want to lose sight of the blessing I have in a Christian radio station that ecourages me daily. And I never want to turn the mic on and ask our listeners to support something that I myself am not willing to put my own dollars behind.

Before and After - Pray for Japan

Well... at the end of the weekend here, I'm sure you, like me have probably had your fill of CNN for awhile, but are still numb and shocked looking at the images coming to us from Japan. The wreckage and the devastation are immense.. and after looking at it for awhile, no disrespect meant at all, but it looks like you're looking at a Junkyard. It's hard to put in perspective that what you're really looking at used to be farmland, or worse, thriving communities... places where people lived, places where people played, places where people worked, places where people called.... home.

While you and I continue to pray for the nation and the people of Japan and the continuing rescue efforts, I'd invite you to check out this link. It's given me some perspective as to what these regions looked like "Before and After"; and you can scroll back and forth to see exactly what was, and what is now - just so we don't forget what the East coast of Japan is supposed to look like, and just how much people there have lost.

DEVASTATION IN JAPAN

Obviously today our thoughts and prayers are with those who are dealing with the devastating aftermath of today's 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan. There just isn't a whole lot else that seems worth talking about today.

How do I provide a reasonable explanation for what is happening today, and why? Simply - I can't. I'll leave those commentaries for those who are far smarter than I.

So all I can do is provide a few of my own ramblings on this day of historic tragedy - March 11, 2011. Probably shallow, inconclusive - full of more questions than answers - but it's the best I can offer.

1. I am mindful of how trivial my own daily concerns appear in the context of an event like this. Suddenly a slow computer, a sore neck, a string of red lights on the way home...don't seem all that important.

2. I am mindful of the power of God. A tidal wave so massive it can gather up boats and cars and houses and everything people own...and push it all forward like a massive pool of sludge. The images are horrifying - but God's power is the force behind it. A force so strong that man is incapable of creating it, matching it...or stopping it. All we can do is watch and videotape what is happening from a chopper. Meanwhile, God's power is so great he could wipe us all off the planet with his pinky.

3. No one knows what today holds. Not a single person in Japan got up this morning realizing what would happen today. The exact same thing could happen right here in Barrie before I leave work today. Or tomorrow. These things happen without warning...and only God can see what is going to happen to us even ten minutes from now.

Life is a precious gift - yet we cannot control much of what comes our way. Why those people have to face this and not us - or me - is mystery. But next time, it could be me. My city. My family. Let us never take our lives or our surroundings for granted. God could shake things up in a heartbeat.

An Amazing Week Away!

Hey Everyone!

It was great to get away for a week or so to the sunny south! My wife and I had never been to a hot spot in the winter; never been on a cruise before - and boy were we spoiled over the past 10 days! We sailed with my wife's brother and his wife ( 3 of us are celebrating our 40th birthday's in 2011!) on Royal Caribbean's 'Liberty of the Seas' - one of the biggest cruising Ships ( don't call it a 'boat') on the ocean today! It is absolutely massive - like a floating city really, and a lot of fun to be on!
I think I gained a pound a day ( 8 pounds for an 8 day cruise ), which, from what I understand is "normal" considering the amazing food everywhere and the incredible dining rooms you eat in:

... and of course they make these fun little animals with your room towels every night:

But one of the most things I will remember about this trip is being out on the ocean... looking around and seeing nothing but water and realizing how huge the ocean really is... and because of it, how much bigger the God who made that ocean must be, and then realizing that same God cares about and loves me, and wants to know me personally! The same is true for you too!

It sure was fun to kick back and relax for a week! And a special thank you for the VIP treatment goes to our travel agent who also happens to be the Godmother of the Liberty of the Seas, Donnalea Madeley.. she took exceptional care of us! TRIP TO ST. LOUIS

Great to be back after a terrific mid-winter getaway to St. Louis! (we couldn't afford St. Lucia like everyone else, so - alphabetically, St. Louis was the next closest destination on the departures board at the airport!)

It's a terrific city - the "Gateway to the Midwest" - rich with history and southern hospitality. Everyone you meet is quite friendly, and life seems to move at a bit of a slower pace. Here were the five best moments of my trip!

1. SEEING THE ST. LOUIS BLUES. NHL home to a couple of former Barrie Colts, and I was lucky enough to get to say a quick hello to ex-Colts captain BJ Crombeen during warmup! They are my favourite NHL team, and to see them play in front of their home crowd was quite a thrill.

2. THE ARCH. 630 feet high, and you can take a strange-looking elevator inside it all the way to the top! A magnificent view, and it looks even more stunning at night along the bank of the Mississippi.

3. THE FOOD. Blackened catfish, cornbread, biscuits and gravy for breakfast, and something you can only find in St. Louis - toasted ravioli! It is outstanding, by the way - a shame I didn't discover it until the night before we left!

4. THE MUSIC. There are some terrific venues where you can relax, have a great meal, and enjoy some live jazz and blues. We saw a band called Morry Sochat and the Special 20's. The lead guy reminded me of Carman! Incredibly talented.

5. MUSEUMS. St. Louisans love their history, and there are many great places where you can relive the civil rights movement, Lewis and Clark's westward expedition, and even old Busch stadium where the Cardinals played for so many years. You really appreciate a place so much better when you get a chance to "travel back in time."

If you enjoy exploring cities you've never been to, I highly recommend St. Louis. "Let's Go Blues!"

College Kid Inventors!

This is one of those inventions when you see it - if you're like me you'll say - "Why didn't I think of that?" I don't know about you, but I 'strongly dislike' ( substitute term for "Hate") touching the public washroom door handle after I've just washed my hands! Germy Germy! Now these College kids out of Minnesota have come up with something they call the "Toepener"... nothing more than a glorified hook... but it works! Check out the demo... and then send it to your workplace office manager, favourite restaurant, church, etc. I think they're onto something here.... can I buy shares?

Rejected John 3:16 Super Bowl Commercial - LookUp 316

It's Super Bowl week football fans - and many of you will be watching, not even for the game, but for the commercials! I know... I know... we don't get the brilliant stuff usually put out by the US, and this year, NO ONE'S going to get to see the ad I've posted below because FOX has rejected the ad on religious grounds. It doesn't sell a product, doesn't ask for money, doesn't even really evangelize or give a 'turn or burn' type message - all the ad does is ask... do you know what John 3:16 really means? Do you know what it says? The ad, if you notice, doesn't even directly ask you to find out what it means - it's indirectly implied through the actors. But FOX says it's too controversial on the basis of "Religious Doctrine". Wow... compare this to some of the inappropriate stuff on TV these days - especially since JOHN 3:16 has been a part of NFL football for as long as I can remember: on signs in the end zones with crazy looking guys in rainbow wigs, on players tape and tattoos, and on Tim Tebow's eye black like you see here... I don't get what the problem is... but... take a look and judge for yourself.

The Guardian Project - The Senator Reveal

So this weekend is the NHL All Star Game... usually a snooze fest with no bodychecks, blocked shots.. and certainly no fights! But the NHL is doing a couple things differently to spice up All Star weekend this year that will have me watching all weekend long, starting tonight with the All Star Fantasy draft. The 2 captains, Nik Lidstrom and Eric Staal have the names of all 36 of the other All Star players, and they're gonna pick out their favourites, just like we used to do on the street when we threw our sticks into a pile, or lined up against the fence and get picked! I think this is gonna be really fun to watch tonight, and I hope the picks come with some personality and good natured ribbing. The thing is... who will be the last millionaire All Star to be picked, and how does that make you feel Mr. Phil Kessel? (... just my guess... we'll see...)
The other thing that's happening this weekend has been a pretty well kept secret for awhile. Marvel Comics has partnered with the NHL to create a new line of superheroes for all 30 teams - superheroes, not mascots - and they've been revealing them one by one on the NHL website every day this month. Now admittedly, SOME team names and image lends itself more to the Superhero world than others. Take for instance, THE Senator below ( my favourite team ). A natural fit, and pretty cool too. The... umm... Maple Leaf on the other hand, is an overgrown tree with *chuckle* photosynthesis powers! Oh boy... you poor Leaf fans never catch a break!
Oh Well... you know, All Star weekend is really for kids. I remember watching these games when I was a kid and amazed by all these great players in one place playing the game. I'm sure every kid will love their favourite team's hero... Enjoy it! ( and check out my awesome SENATOR below!!)

So I see 2011 has been a great year for the Toronto Maple Leafs so far! 5-1 in six games, their lone loss being a narrow 2-1 defeat to Boston. Not bad...not bad at all! It certainly has our very own Tim Maassarany doing the dance of praise these days.

Could 2011 "be the year?" Unfortunately in hockey, you need a good season, not a good year. They managed just 13 wins in 36 games before the turn of the calendar.

I hardly watch the Leafs at all - in fact, I'm quite certain it's been several years now since I've seen an entire game start to finish, even on television. As a youngster, I always dreamed of going to games at Maple Leaf Gardens - I still have my ticket stub from my first Leaf game in 1985. But after a few years, I began to realize there were plenty of other exciting teams that seemed more committed to winning (in my mind). Nobody wants to cheer for a loser. So I took interest in a couple of Norris Division rivals - The Chicago Blackhawks and the St. Louis Blues, and eventually settled on the Blues as my adopted team. (yes, I was cheering for CuJo in the 1993 playoffs.)

I think the most frustrating thing for Leaf fans seems to be that they can't get a solid rebuild going. Every year they "almost make the playoffs" - and unless they bottom out, they can't draft any of the elite prospects you need to build a contender around (and when they do get a good draft position, they end up being picks they've traded away.)

Anyways - don't plan the parade yet Leaf fans! 11 points is a long way back. And even if they do sneak in, I can't see this team putting up a fight against the likes of Philadelphia and Tampa Bay. But what do WE know? You still gotta play the games...and that's the beauty of sports!

Turns out, this has turned into an unbelievable good news story! After the video below went viral, Ted Williams is homeless no more. He's had offers to fly oversees to do radio and TV voicing, the Cleveland Cavaliers have offered him a job as a stadium announcer, MTV has contacted him about a reality show...the list of opportunities seems to be endless!

THE GOD-GIVEN GIFT OF A GREAT VOICE

No - I'm not talking about myself - or Woody - in the title of this post!

This is a guy with a voice I could only dream of having. His name is Ted Williams. He is homeless.

I'm not sure how encouraged I should be by that on it's own! But it is remarkable that an announcer this gifted can be out of work, and yet still use his talent to earn himself a few dollars on the street.

So Another year has come and gone, filled with great Christian music, and it has been VERY hard for me to narrow down my 5 favourite CD’s of 2010… I probably should have done my Top 10 for 2010… that would’ve sounded smoother… but in any case… these are the songs and sounds that filled my head for most of the year… here goes:

At #5: … wait… can I do honourable mentions first?

The Afters – Light Up the Sky – not just a strong opening track – I listened to this entire record – cover to cover – over and over again – strong songwriting by Josh and the boys with really catchy hooks make this a great Rock ‘n Roll album.

Jars of Clay’s – The Shelter was a great album for the ADD sufferers among us with it’s constant guest stars on every track from Mac Powell to Brandon Heath to Sara Groves.. and it works!

And my wife would kill me if I didn’t mention Vicky Beeching’s Eternity Invades – she has just fallen in love with that record this year, and so subsequently, I’ve heard it a lot as well…

Ok, so at #5: Newsboys – Born Again – probably the most anticipated album of the year – would this Michael Tait thing really work? You bet it does with the first 5 tracks exploding out of the gate, it’s a great driving CD.

#4: Michael Tait’s buddy – Toby Mac – Tonight – Toby’s well into his ‘40’s but the sounds are still fresh, the beats kick, and he says ‘City on our Knees’ may be the best song he’s ever written – Great CD to workout to.

#3: Lincoln Brewster – Real Life – the thing that struck me most about this record – especially the first 5 tracks is that Lincoln is writing from a pure place of Joy – the Joy of knowing Jesus and what he’s done in his life. And isn’t that in itself something to sing about? A lot of Retro artists used to sing about the Joy of the Lord – why have we gotten away from that? And you haven’t even heard the best song on the record yet – ‘Best Days’ – LOVE IT!

#2: Sanctus Real – Pieces of a Real Heart – one of my favourite bands now and even though this record doesn’t crunch as much as Sanctus usually does, how can you go wrong with amazing songs like ‘Forgiven’ and ‘Lead Me’ and the stories behind them!

And finally, my favourite CD of 2010 – it’s been with me in my car and in my CD player ever since it came out in February, Canadians Starfield and ‘the Saving One’ – the title track sounds like a modern day Hymn, there’s a little praise, a little dance, a touch of ‘80’s and a whole lot of vulnerability from Tim and Jon Neufeld. The lyric sheet to ‘Rediscover You’ and ‘Something to Say’ are some of the most real feelings I’ve heard and sung along too in a loooonnnggg time, and they’ve really spoken to me right where I was and kept me close to God over this past year. No wonder they took home a bunch of Covenant Awards this year. As for the New Year - I'm looking forward to Brandon Heath's 'Leaving Eden' and Kristian Stanfill's 'Mountains Move' - both coming in January.

Zach's New Hockey Stick

So besides the 'Kinect' which we are all still feverishly playing in our house, I think Zach's "other" most favourite gift was his new Hockey Stick he got from his Grandpa. So on one of my final days off, we made sure we had a fierce game of driveway Hockey to break his stick in and ... well, the state of the garage door tells you he's doing pretty well on brushing up on his shot! ( Why did I ever go for a WHITE Garage door!!)

THREE FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS MOVIES?

This is a slam-dunk list for me, and without question, I will be watching all of them at least once over the Holidays!

3. "Miracle on 34th Street." I like the 1994 version with little Mara Wilson playing the 6-year old girl...but I know you purists will go back to the 1947 original with Maureen O'Harra and John Payne. I can appreciate that...but the '94 version was the first I remember seeing. It's a great story!

2. "Polar Express." Never thought a children's movie would crack my Top 3, but it's my son's favourite movie, and for that reason, it has also become mine. Especially the hot chocolate song...we actually like to have our own mugs of hot chocolate in hand for that part of the movie!

1. "It's A Wonderful Life." (photo above) Why? Becuase if you ask those who know me (especially my wife)...I AM George Bailey! I've never had bankers show up at my house asking me where the next payment is - but there are times where the pressure of life gets to me. Money's tight. Things aren't going well. Somebody else makes a mistake that affects you (remember Uncle Billy losing the bank deposit?) There's something in George Bailey's personality that I can relate to. And I've all too often forgotten to appreciate and be thankful for the most important things in my life. Our families, the possessions we DO have (certainly a roof over our heads), and people in the community and friends who truly care about us. Of course, by the end of the movie George has been reminded of all of this in a very unforgetable way! And the movie brings me back to this realization as well.

Without fail (gut-level confession here!) I tear up in the final scene, when George is standing in front of the Christmas tree, watching everyone who cares about him - even those he didn't realize cared about him - pour piles and piles of money on the living room coffee table. And then he looks at his wife and their two precious girls and realizes that the most important things in his life are standing right next to him - and have been there with him the whole time.

My apologies for not putting something "Christmassy" up today - but I thought this was just too cool not to post. Thanks to Mark for sending this our way!

The unidentified person in this picture is the first human being ever to be captured in an photograph! In 1838 Louis Daguerre took this picture of Boulevard du Temple in Paris. Images back then required an exposure time of about ten minutes, so people, carriages, and anything else in motion ended up getting blurred from the scene.

So how did this guy end up appearing in the picture - becoming the first ever human to appear in a photograph? Take a close look and see if you can guess.

The Day the Reindeer Died... sort of

Disclaimer: Rednosed Reindeer being poked in the head and severely "deflating" the spirits at a Santa Claus Parade may be distressing to younger viewers. Good thing he's only a balloon. Still, I found this hard to watch. Hasn't Rudolph been picked on enough throughout his life? "Oh the Humanity!"... or Venison...something like that?? Who planned this parade route?
